Mort Sherwin, a friend of Sam's, is looking for someone to manage his son's baseball team. The Coach offers to do it, which Sam thinks is a great idea. Diane however doesn't as Coach has never been in charge and she thinks the cutthroat nature of baseball will eat him alive. Both Sam and Diane are wrong: the Coach ends up being a tough as nails manager who works the kids like it's a major league team - all work, no fun and discipline through ridicule. But at least the team is winning. Sam and Diane try and talk him into taking a softer approach, but to no avail. But in the end, is winning everything? Andy 'Andy' Schroeder, the ex-con murderer who Sam once paid to take Diane out, returns to the bar. He holds up the bar, but in the process of, his true intentions come out: he wants to go back to prison since he feels that he can't make it on the outside. Feeling sorry for him, Diane uncovers what he really wants to do: to be an actor. She wants to be his savior, and calls upon the assistance of Professor Sebastian DeWitt, an old acting teacher of hers, to adjudicate Andy's talent or lack thereof. But first, Diane has to get Andy into acting shape. Because of her help, Andy falls for Diane, but also is still on the brink of hearing THOSE voices that caused his original act of murder. When Andy finds out that Diane and Sam are an item, he is hurt but says he will use this experience in the upcoming scene he will be doing with Diane from Othello. After some debate, they end up at Diane's apartment. Once there, they get into another of their heated arguments based on the differences in their personalities, initiated by Sam's ridiculing of Diane's menagerie of stuffed animals. Diane eventually kicks Sam out, who storms back to the bar for support. Carla however says to Sam that she knows how he can get Diane back: exert his manly power over her. Sam heeds the advice. Sam has an inferiority complex with his brother Derek: he's apparently good looking (we the viewer never do see him), is rich, is an international lawyer, owns a Lear jet, has a beautiful rich baritone singing voice, can make trick pool shots, can tap dance, finds Norm a good job and teaches Coach how to speak Spanish. While at the bar, he's the center of attention, except with Sam. All of this Sam can tolerate. The one thing he can't is the fact that Diane is smitten with Derek, and Derek with her - Derek has asked her to go to Martha's Vineyard in his jet - something she doesn't admit to Sam to massage his fragile ego. Once Carla tells her that Sam was once a professional athlete, Lana sets her sights on him. Flattered, Sam agrees to become her next client and bed-partner as he's searching for the spotlight, something that's been missing in his life since he quit baseball. After a while, he's happy with his new acting career, but unhappy that he feels that he is expected to perform for Lana between the sheets on command. Diane and Coach, using slightly different tactics, try to convince Sam that the loss of his self-esteem is not worth the acting career. Before going off to get his crew, Dave admits to Carla and Diane that Sam was not his first choice for the interview, nor was he the second, third, fourth, fifth or sixth choice. In going through with the interview, Sam, based on a mid-interview incident, comes to a realization that places a certain punctuation mark at this phase of his professional life. After another loss by the Red Sox, this time to the Yankees, Carla vows for the umpteenth time that she is no longer a fan. She shows that she is all hot air as usual when a man named Big Ed, a Yankees fan from New York, comes into the bar denigrating the Bosox and Bostonians for supporting the Bosox. When Big Ed starts in on Sam the ex-big time Bosox player who is now the drunk, Carla has had it with his insults, and physically assaults Big Ed. He in turn threatens to sue unless Sam fires Carla. Sam is in a conundrum as he considers Carla a friend, but she has let her anger get the better of her too many times and if he doesn't do as Eddie requests, he could lose the bar. Sam and Diane convince Carla to see a therapist to deal with her anger issues. To save Carla's job and the bar, Sam too has to convince Ed that in Carla doing so, she is dealing with the issue, and Carla in turn has to demonstrate to Ed that she is both remorseful and changed, which is a tall order since she has ...
